CABE SEAL OF EXCELLENCE AWARD
Top Award Given by California Association of Bilingual Education
ROWLAND HEIGHTS, CA – FEBRUARY 18, 2020 – Rowland Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Julie Mitchell announced today that Hurley Elementary School in La Puente, California, is one of only three schools in the state to receive the 2020 Seal of Excellence Award by the California Association of Bilingual Education (CABE). This award honors exemplary bilingual education programs throughout the state and schools in particular that have established effective programs for their English Learners. The school will be recognized and presented with the Seal of Excellence at the CABE State Conference on April 10 in San Francisco.
“It is truly an honor that one of our schools has received this coveted award,” said Silvia Rivas, Director of Special Projects for the Rowland Unified School District. “We are proud of the Hurley students, parents, staff that work hard every day so that our students can become the future bilingual scientists, engineers, doctors and teachers of tomorrow. Felicitaciones Hurley Hawks, estamos orgullosos de sus logros.”
The Seal of Excellence is one of the highest awards CABE has to recognize schools for their vision of bi-literacy, their commitment towards educational excellence for all students, and their focus on providing students with the skills they will need to be successful in the 21st Century. Hurley Elementary is being recognized for its outstanding commitment to biliteracy with its Spanish Dual Language Immersion program that begins in Transitional Kindergarten through 6th grade and it’s outstanding overall academic growth of its English Learners regardless of their program choice.
“Our staff is remarkably dedicated to closing the achievement gap for our English Learners and we believe it is our moral imperative to provide our students with an exceptional 21st century elementary education,” said Hurley Elementary Principal, Dr. Yesenia Alvarez. “This award reflects the hard work and commitment of our teachers, staff, students and parents."
In order for a school to receive the CABE Seal of Excellence Award, certain rigorous criteria must be met including but not limited to:
- Substantial evidence of the bilingual language proficiency (English and other language) and academic achievement for students in the program
- A description of the comprehensive and enriched instructional program that includes English Language Development, primary language instruction, and English instruction
- A description of the professional development plan for certificated staff and how staff use effective, evidence-based instructional strategies
