The DATE Program Provides prevention education and service fro children and families  in the areas of drug, alcohol, tobacco, and violence prevention. The goal is to teach children resiliency and offer positive alternative in developing recommendations for effectiveness.

Curriculum– Research based prevention curriculum is used in grades k-12. The District adopted materials focus on substance abuse and violence prevention, decision– making , and refusal skills. In Kindergarten through 6th grade and in 9th grade health classes, Too Good fro Drug and violence is taught. In 7th and 8th grades, Projects Alert is the approved curriculum. All lessons are research based effective program.

Parent Education– Two 10– weeks series of classes are offered each year in English and Spanish.

Tobacco Cessation– Information is available to children and adults regarding programs for tobacco cessation. Classes addressing tobacco prevention and cessation are provided at all high school campuses, funded through a state-awarded grant.

California Healthy Kids’ Survey– Given each year at selected grades levels, this state– mandated survey measures students’ attitudes, knowledge and use of substance and violence.

Counseling– Contracted through professional agencies, counseling is provided on a regular basis for high risk students at each high school.

After School Programs/Assemblies– Based on individual school needs, funding is provided for activities with a prevention focus such as after-school programs, assemblies, and remedial reading using prevention materials.

Events

Red Ribbon Week– Part nation –wide observance the last week in October each year, the observance is used to focus students/community attention on promoting a drug-free lifestyle. 

Great American Smoke Out– Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, this national observation on the third Thursdays of November each year focuses attention on prevention and cessation from the hazardous effects of tobacco use.

Safe Communities Week– This event is observed in the spring of each year. It brings all facts of the community together to promote personal/community health and safety. Kick butts day is observed at the high schools as an awareness of tobacco use. Students participate in teen forums poster and essay contest skits, and other activities that are planned by the school site with the assistance of tobacco prevention agencies such as American Cancer Society

K-6th Grades:   Too Good For Drugs/Violence Taught by classrooms teacher

7,8th Grades:    Project Alert Taught by Science Teachers

9-12th Grades:  Too Good for Drugs/Violence taught by 9th grade Health Teacher
