In this videoclip, Mrs. Dzama is guiding her students through reciting a series of content-based chants, which for the most part are sung to tunes familiar to students. Teacher-created chants contextualize content vocabulary within a repetitive pattern. Used effectively to start a lesson, students are provided with regular intervals of guided oral practice. Mrs. Dzama stops at intervals to help students make connections to visual resources from previous instruction that are displayed around the room. As you listen to the chants, you can hear the student recite academic content language embedded within the content concepts students are growing to understand.
