There's gold in them thar hills. And darned if the students at Shelyn Elementary in Rowland Heights weren't panning it out.
Every kid was proud of the specks of gold that they had washed out of the mountain scree. Never mind that it was probably fool's gold, pyrite.
But then the real wealth was the experience the fourth-graders were having with the Pioneer Living program.
The PTA paid for the outside program, which allows students to experience life in the 1800s.
Students learned about pioneer living through interactive experiences.
While the kids didn't have to shear sheep, they did learn how to card the wool.
