Nogales High School Plunges Into the Future
New Aquatic Center Benefits Students and the Community
The grand opening of the Nogales High School Aquatic Center marks a new era for students with an elevated athletic facility built to serve the nearly 1,500 students who attend the school each year.
Funded through the Measure R Bond approved in 2012, the new facility offers significant improvements compared to the pool student-athletes previously used. The new aquatic center features a 14-lane pool large enough to host water polo matches and swimming competitions. The facility also added locker rooms with showers for boys and girls, plus classrooms, coaching offices and a grandstand for spectators.
“We are excited to offer Nogales students and the community one of the finest school pools in Southern California,” said Rowland Unified School District Board President Cary C. Chen. “Our student-athletes get the modern facility they deserve, and others have the option through physical education classes and public events for healthy exercise and to learn how to swim, potentially saving lives.”
The new pool features a state-of-the-art filtration system that lowers energy use and reduces the amount of chemicals needed to keep the water safe.
The project demonstrates the community’s commitment to enriching students' lives by investing in schools. Measure R, approved by two-thirds of voters in 2012, funded the $36 million project, which also added fine arts facilities at Nogales High.
“All of us are grateful for the community, which stepped up its commitment to education by approving the bond measures that provided the financial resources needed for this and many other school improvement projects,” said Rowland Unified School District Superintendent Alex Flores. “We truly want to thank everyone for their continued support for the district, and more importantly, our students.
