ROWLAND HEIGHTS, CA – JULY 22, 2026 – Joining changemakers from across the nation, Rowland Unified School Board Vice President Kevin T. Hayakawa, Ph.D., and School Board Members Ellen Park and Agnes P. Gonzalez attended the third annual AAPI LEAD Summit in Los Angeles at the JW Marriott L.A. LIVE, July 17 - 19. The conference convened hundreds of elected and appointed Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) public officials and civic leaders, as well as leaders from business, entertainment, education, philanthropy and community organizations. The conference focused on pressing community challenges, including economic affordability, civic innovation, AI integration, and the prevention of anti-Asian hate. Key special guests included former Vice President Kamala D. Harris and AAPI LEAD Board President and San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu who led conversations on public service, leadership and the future of civic engagement.
“It was truly an honor and privilege to attend the AAPI LEAD Summit and represent the Rowland Unified School District. It was inspiring to join leaders from across the country — including state legislators, city council members, and school board members — to discuss how diverse perspectives and lived experiences can strengthen public service and better serve our communities,” said Dr. Hayakawa. “We reflected on the progress our community has made in breaking the bamboo ceiling while recognizing the important work that still lies ahead. I returned with new ideas, valuable connections, and an even stronger commitment to ensuring every student in Rowland Unified has the opportunity to succeed and see themselves reflected in their leaders.”
