Your parents were right. Turning off the lights when you leave the room really DOES save a lot of money.

Of course, when you're talking about an entire school district, potential savings could reach millions.

If you don't believe me, just ask Juliann Anderson, the energy management coordinator for Rowland Unified School District.

"Our energy conservation program has already saved almost $1 million over the past 32 months," Anderson said. "The district cut its energy use nearly 15 percent."

While high-tech devices such as LED lighting or superefficient air conditioning units do add up to big savings, they all require a big payout in the beginning.
