ROWLAND HIGH STUDENTS TAKE TOP SPOTS AT COLLEGE DRAFTING CONTEST

Congratulations to Rowland High School Seniors Sean Velazquez and Posin Wang for taking first and second place in Advanced Architecture at the 33rd Annual Rio Hondo College High School Drafting Contest last week. The three-day event was held March 4 through March 6, 2009 at Rio Hondo College in Whittier.  More than 250 students from 13 different high schools participated in six different categories. Drawings were judged on comprehensiveness, precision and accuracy.

Velazquez is a four-year Architecture student whose career goal is to be an architect. He plans on attending Mt. SAC and then transferring to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo/Pomona. Wang is in her third year of Architecture. Her goal, as well, is to be a professional architect and will most likely be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the fall. Student winners received an assortment of drafting tools, software and books worth hundreds of dollars.

The Advanced Architecture contest this year involved a remodel of a three bedroom house, adding a fourth bedroom with private bath. Students needed to draw a floor plan, elevations, roof plan, and door and window schedule—all in only three hours. Rowland students competed against Diamond Bar High School students, who placed in the advanced competition in slots 3rd through 10th, with Rowland High School taking first and second.

Also receiving awards and prizes at the contest were Eric Curiel (grade 10), 8th place in Advanced Mechanical CADD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting). Curiel used “Inventor”, a solid modeling software, to create a three dimensional model of a complex machine part. Gilbert Sun (grade 9), placed 6th in Beginning Mechanical using AutoCAD software, and Senior Nyria Gonzalez was awarded 10th place in Beginning Architecture (using conventional drafting tools). “This was quite an accomplishment considering over 50 students competed in this area of the contest,” said Rowland High Teacher Gerald Krumm. “I am so proud of my students who were involved -- Everyone who is invited to participate is a winner just from the experience alone.”

Other RHS students participating in this year’s contest included Tara Sinkarjarern, Jung Mi Kim, and Cindy Liu in Beginning Architecture, and Chriscelle Banas and Charrsy Zhang in Advanced Architecture. Jason Mejia competed in Advanced Mechanical—AutoCAD, along with Nyria Gonzalez.
