Teachers Cook at McDonald’s For Fundraiser March 18

LA PUENTE, CA -- MARCH 4, 2009 – Hurley Elementary School is actively seeking donations to build a new library twice in size for the students and community in La Puente. Teachers and staff will put on a chef hat and cook up fun and funds at a special “McTeach Night” at McDonalds on March 18. The public is invited to attend the event from 5 – 8 p.m., where a percentage of sales from the night will go towards the new library. The McDonald’s is located at 15628 Gale Avenue, between Hacienda Blvd. and Turnball Canyon Road in Hacienda Heights. **The PTA will also be providing bus transportation to Hurley families to get them to the fundraiser.**

            The school has committed to raising $40,000 to match a grant provided by The Wonder of Reading, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring the love of reading in children. With their support, Hurley Elementary will be able to convert two classrooms into a new and improved library that will feature $10,000 of new books. Wonder of Reading will also provide training for volunteers in a new one-on-one Reading Support Program. Additional funds are needed for costs such as shelving, furniture, technology and books. The new Wonder of Reading Library Grand Opening is scheduled for April 3, 2009.

            “This new library is extremely important to our students and the community we serve,” said Hurley Principal Van Windham. “It will not only support our literacy efforts, but will offer expanded resources to our families.”

            The public can make tax-deductible contributions to the school:

• $10 – Library book with dedicate plate
• $50 – Name on wall of appreciation
• $50 – Bookshelf
• $250 – Bookcase
• $500 – Encap Bookcase
• $1,000 – Outdoor Bend in the Library Garden Entrance
• $4,000 – Fireplace & Nook
• $5,000 – Librarian’s Control Desk
