Nogales Poetry Student Rozlind Silva Makes "Say Word" National Slam Team

Powerful Poetry: Nogales Student Makes “Say Word Youth Slam Team”

WEST COVINA, CA – MARCH 25, 2013 – Nogales High School 10th Grader Rozlind Silva has loved poetry since she was 5 years old. Her passion for words earned her a spot on the Los Angeles Youth "Say Word" National Slam Team. Students from San Diego to Los Angeles competed in the poetry slam contest on March 16 at the Inner City Arts/Rosenthal Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. Performing three poems of original work in front of a panel of five judges, Silva was selected as one of the top five poets that make up the Say Word Youth Slam Team to represent Southern California in 2013 Brave New Voices Poetry Competition this August in Chicago. The five poets will experience three months of intensive writing, performing and collaborations to get them ready for the Nationals. Silva is involved in the Poetry Club on campus, but also choir, numerous dance classes including Filipino Dance and plays the guitar.
