SAN GABRIEL EDUCATORS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS RALLY TO

DISCUSS WITH LEGISLATORS CHALLENGES FACING NEXT GENERATION OF STUDENTS

GLENDALE, CA – MARCH 9, 2011 – Education leaders and community members from throughout San Gabriel Valley will come together at a March 12 forum to discuss the local effects of devastating statewide education cuts. The forum also includes Congressman Adam Schiff, Senators Carol Liu and Ed Hernandez; Assembly Members Anthony Portantino, Roger Hernández and Mike Eng; and School Services President and CEO, Ron Bennett, who will facilitate the discussion. It will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Glendale High School Auditorium.

Students, teachers, administrators and parents will speak on behalf of students in the San Gabriel region about the debilitating consequences ongoing cuts to education have on the local education system. Community members will discuss the changes seen over the past two years, as the very programs that ensure student success are downsized or eliminated.

“We can’t let California’s lack of investment in education damage our state’s prospects for economic development and growth,” said Robert Cruz, regional director for the California School Boards Association and Charter Oak USD Trustee. “This forum is an opportunity for the San Gabriel community to come together and discuss the issues we face in providing the resources necessary to educate our students.”

Additional participants include: Joylene Wagner, Glendale USD Board of Education and the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association (LACSTA) Director, Glendale USD First District PTA President Elect, Lynn Miyamoto, Field Elementary School Principal Ana Maria Apodaca from Pasadena Unified School District, Rowland Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Maria Ott, Brandon Dade, Assistant Principal of Instruction at Alhambra High School, and student speakers Matilda Dam from Alhambra High School and Henna Idrees from Nogales High School.
