Walnut resident Jonathan Black remembers the first time he enrolled in Laura Tovar's Summer Arts Academy 14 years ago when he was in second grade.
"Spending summer here as a kid, I didn't think how cool it'd be to be a part of the summer program," the 21-year-old recalled. "People came out of their shells to learn about music, dance and art."

Black went from being the first drummer in Tovar's jazz band, to participating in the arts program for five consecutive summers, to earning a music scholarship to attend an Arkansas university.
