Hollingworth Elementary Launches College Program - Becomes First "No Excuses University" School in San Gabriel Valley

HOLLINGWORTH ELEMENTARY BECOMES FIRST

“NO EXCUSES UNIVERSITY” SCHOOL IN SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

WEST COVINA, CA – OCTOBER 8, 2009 – Launching its program that promotes college attendance starting in elementary school, Hollingworth Elementary in West Covina will hold its No Excuses University Kick-Off event on Friday, October 16 at 8:15 a.m. “No Excuses University” is a network of elementary, middle, and junior high schools across the United States that actively promote a comprehensive model of college readiness to all students the moment they begin elementary school. Hollingworth Elementary will be the first school in the San Gabriel Valley that will take part in the network.

“This is a huge privilege and honor to be accepted into the No Excuses University Network.  This would not have happened without the support, hard work and dedication from the entire school body.  Statistics clearly show that students who can achieve a college degree will be able to pursue a brighter, stronger and more prosperous livelihood.  We at Hollingworth are truly excited for the future of our students.”

Hollingworth Elementary has worked diligently to expose students to powerful college symbolism as part of the No Excuses University program. College flags and banners are hung on doors across the campus and partnerships are being built between classrooms and universities along with college alumni speakers presenting to students.

At the Kick-Off event, students will have fun listening to various college fight songs thanks to the Nogales High School Noble Regiment Band. Alumni from UCI, UCLA, Northwestern, and Cal Poly Pomona are scheduled to attend.
