STUDENT ARCHITECTURE AWARDS

As the school year begins, the students in Rowland High School's Architecture and Computer Aided Design and Drafting classes will enjoy a program that earned many awards at the close of last year.

Many students participated in the 33rd annual Rio Hondo College High School Drafting Contest last spring. More than 250 students from 13 high schools competed in six categories over a three-day period. Over $40,000 in prizes was awarded.

The Architecture contest involved a remodel of a three-bedroom house, adding a fourth bedroom with private bath. Students had only three hours to draw a floor plan, elevations, roof plan and door and window schedules.

Rowland student Sean Velasquez took first place, while Posin Wang, also of Rowland, captured second in the Architecture contest. Both students plan to attend college and become professional architects.

Three additional RHS students earned awards in other categories. Eric Curiel took eighth place in Advanced Mechanical CAD. Gilbert Sun earned sixth place in Beginning Mechanical. Nyria Gonzalez captured 10th place in Beginning Architecture.

Additional members of the RHS team were Chriscelle Banas, Jung Mi Kim, Cindy Liu, Jason Mejia, Tara Sinkarjarern and Charsey Zhang.

The experience was invaluable to all participants. Congratulations!
