ROWLAND HEIGHTS, CA – APRIL 16, 2024 – The Rowland Unified School District is excited to announce that Rowland High School Senior Ruby Wu was named a 2024 Edison Scholar, one of 30 high school seniors awarded a $50,000 scholarship to help them pursue a college career in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM). At a special ceremony in the high school multipurpose room, Wu was surprised by Edison International with a giant check in front of her fellow students, staff and family.

Wu plans to major in civil and environmental engineering and minor in political science. “I want to focus on combating natural hazards such as earthquakes because it is a common occurrence in both California and Taiwan where I have family. It is my desire through civil engineering to find affordable and enduring methods that can be implemented throughout the world, no matter rich or poor,” said Wu.

Wu is proud of her contribution at Rowland High School in the Math Club where she increased participation by more than 300% with organizing creative events like Math Jeopardy and an Escape room. “I also am very proud of my work in the community through the Youth Advisory Commission with the City of Walnut,” said Wu. “I was able to give the city staff opinions on how to improve their events and to tailor them towards younger people. I also helped organize projects like mental health week, cyber security day, and more STEM resources.” Wu says she is not just a STEM person, but loves to play video games, enjoys practicing golf with her dad, enjoys guitar, piano, in addition to crafts and solving puzzles. She is in the process of her college decision process, with choices such as UCLA and Cornell University.

"I am in awe of these students’ ambitions and the energy that drives them to make our world a better place through STEM,” said Pedro J. Pizarro, president and CEO of Edison International. “Delivering the life-changing news to the students and their families is a special moment, and it’s a privilege to be a part of their journey. These students are exceptionally bright, and I look forward to seeing the contributions they make.”
