This multi-day strategy combines strategic thinking with visual scaffolding to approach the understanding of content-specific vocabulary that students will encounter in a unit of study. Mrs. Dzama begins each day with a review of previous content vocabulary related to their unit theme before introducing the new vocabulary term that they will be encountering in the lesson of the day. Her review captures the explicit language and content features of the strategy protocol that build from existing background knowledge to negotiating formal dictionary understanding and culminate with an illustration to support comprehensibility.
