Rowland Hosts Employee Back-to-School Kick Off Event Aug. 19

CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA – AUGUST 18, 2008 – Vice President of the National Education Association, Lily Eskelsen, will be the guest speaker for the Rowland Unified School District Employee Back-to-School Kick-Off event on Tuesday, August 19. Eskelsen will be introduced by Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Darline P. Robles. Eskelsen has served on the board of the 3.2 million-member National Education Association since 2002. She was named Utah Teacher of the Year in 1989, one year later was elected president of the Utah Education Association and has served as a member of the White House Strategy Session on Improving Hispanic Education. She will address Rowland’s 2,100 employees on the topic, “The Cause of Public Education: Caring for the Whole Child.”

The Kick-Off event begins at 8 a.m. and is held at the Industry Hills Expo Center in the Grand Arena, at 16200 Temple Avenue in the City of Industry.

The Master of Ceremonies is Rowland Superintendent Dr. Maria Ott, with performances by the Nogales and Rowland High School bands and cheerleaders, Rowland High School singers, messages from the Board of Education and Superintendent Ott on the District’s strategic planning, along with the recognition of the 2008-09 Rowland Employees of the Year: Administrator of the Year - Susan Halliday, Principal of Killian Elementary; Classified Employee of the Year - Pamela Johnson, Office Assistant at Rowland Elementary; and Teacher of the Year - John Molla, Math Teacher at Rowland High School.
