ALVARADO RECEIVES COVETED REDESIGNATION AS 2017 CALIFORNIA "SCHOOLS TO WATCH" MODEL MIDDLE SCHOOL

Alvarado Intermediate Receives Coveted Redesignation

as One of California’s 2017 “Schools to Watch™—Taking Center Stage" Model Middle Schools

ROWLAND HEIGHTS, CA – FEBRUARY 9, 2017 – Rowland Unified School District’s Alvarado Intermediate School was named for the fifth time as one of California’s “Schools to Watch – Taking Center Stage” model middle schools. California State Schools Chief Tom Tolarkson announced yesterday the 2017 award winners and that Alvarado Intermediate was one of 19 previously designated schools with sustained progress that will allow them to retain their designation in the state and national program which identifies high-performing middle grade schools in the areas of academic excellence, responsiveness to the needs of young adolescents and social equity. The school was first named a Model Middle School in 2004, then re-designated in 2007, 2011, 2014 and now again in 2017.

On behalf of the Alvarado Intermediate School staff, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Alvarado has been selected once again for the very prestigious Schools To Watch recognition by the California League of Schools. Alvarado has now been redesignated as a School To Watch for the fourth time and is only one of four schools in the state that is able to make that claim,” said Principal Scott Cavanias. “This is a testament to all of the hard work of our dedicated staff members, the world's greatest students and families, and a supportive district leadership team. We look to continue to build upon all of the amazing things that are happening at AIS and strive to become better each and every day. GO MATADORS!"

The STW™—TCS program is sponsored by the California League of Middle Schools (CLMS)  and the California Department of Education, in partnership with the California Middle Grades Alliance. Schools must complete an extensive application that is reviewed by middle grades experts to earn this designation. In order to retain the designation, each school is re-evaluated every three years.

Alvarado Intermediate will be recognized in Sacramento at the California Middle Grades Alliance annual luncheon on February 23, 2017, and during the California League of Schools’ Annual Conference North on February 24-26, 2017. The honored schools will have an opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and network with other middle grade educators from around the state.
