Nogales High School Senior Art Show and Movie Premiere at Puente Hills Mall

LA PUENTE, CA—MARCH 28, 2011—The award-winning Nogales High School International Baccalaureate (IB) students will showcase their artistic pieces at the 11th Annual Senior Art Show. The Movie Premiere and Art Exhibition will be held at the Puente Hills Mall on April 2 from 5-8 p.m. on the lower level next to Macy’s and Todai (Space #378). The Puente Hills Mall is located at 1600 South Azusa Avenue in the City of Industry.

“The kind of work these students are doing can be compared to that of a college senior,” said James Ellison, Nogales visual and performing arts teacher and student advisor. He encourages students who are part of his program to pursue a higher education at an Art Institute. “Nogales High School is amazing in what they do with the IB students, it even blows away some of the colleges,” said Ellison.

New this year will be the premiere of four short films produced by IB film students. “This is a great opportunity for film students to show our work to the public,” said Stephen Lira, IB film student. Other screenings will be shown on Sunday, April 10 from 2 - 6 p.m. and April 11-15 from 4 - 9 p.m. Trailers for these films can be seen on the Nogales High School website at nogaleshs.org. The film students work in a million dollar, state-of-the-art studio that was funded by grants. In this studio, students can record, live mix, edit and produce in HD, as well as duplicate in Blu-ray.

The Nogales Senior Art Exhibit will showcase 15 students’ work in various types of media, such as acrylic, acrylic and oil, assemblage, ceramic, mixed media, digital photo and ink. Gallery hours will be April 9 from 4 - 8 p.m., April 10, 2 – 6 p.m., and April 11-15 from 4 – 9 p.m.

“We’ve been working hard for two years, we are very excited and we will be ready,” said Axel Leano, IB art student. Leano will be showing his acrylic piece titled, “Challenging Stereotypes.” For some of these students, art is an important part of their lives. “As I grew and developed my art skills, I learned to express myself in a way which I could not do with words,” said Michelle Callueng, IB art student. Callueng will be displaying her acrylic piece titled, “Artist Crossing.”

The IB art program brings students from La Puente Valley ROP and the Arts and Communication Career Pathway together to prepare students for their future in the art industry.
