The staff at Villacorta Elementary School is committed to stimulating the minds of students and touching their hearts. Our staff of caring educators provides rigorous, standards-based instruction in a safe and positive learning environment. We pledge to work with students and families to maximize learning and inspire students to be life-long learners and productive citizens. We encourage parents to attend school activities and to visit often.
Villacorta Vikings take part in a wide variety of activities that provide a well-rounded education. Included are:
·         Student Council
·         Computer Lab
·         Violence and drug abuse prevention programs
·         Before and after-school tutoring by classroom teachers
·         Gifted and Talented Education
·         Accelerated Reader
·         Cross-age tutoring – "Reading Buddies"
·         Classroom reading interventions with para-professionals
·         Students in grades Kindergarten through third benefit from smaller class sizes
·         Instrumental music for grades five and six
·         After school sports league for grades five and six
·         Chorus for grades five and six
·         Individual and group counseling services (partnership with Children’s Bureau, a non-profit counseling agency)
 
We believe in recognizing student achievement. Students earn awards and certificates for:
·         Attendance – monthly, trimester, and annual
·         Academic achievement – Principal's Honor Roll; CST/STAR improvement medals
·         Accelerated Reader progress
·         Acts of helpfulness and caring
·         Citizenship
 
Special Features and Programs
·         NEW Wonder of Reading Libary, a renovated and remodeled library
·         Reading is Fundamental, supplies our Kindergarten through 3rd grade students with new books three times per year to encourage the love of reading and the building up of each child's personal library at home
·         Technology focus for classrooms to include LCD projectors, internet access, and internet technology such as United Streaming, a web-based platform for instructional media
·         Regular communication with parents in English and Spanish using Connect-Ed, a web-based automated calling technology
·         Partnership with Los Angeles District Attorney’s ACT Program (Abolish Chronic Truancy) to improve daily student attendance 
 
Villacorta teachers participate in ongoing staff development so they are well prepared to meet students’ needs. Recent school-wide focus areas include:
*       Thinking Maps – used to intensify comprehension across all curricular areas
*       Write from the Beginning – organizational strategies to assist students in the writing process
*       Explicit Direct Instruction
*       Emphasis on teaching to academic content standards
*       Instructional strategies for English Learners
 
Parent Involvement and Participation

We recognize parents as the first teachers in a child’s life. We are committed to offering resources and support to parents in their efforts to educate their children. Included are:
  • Parent Institute for Quality Education
  • Latino Literacy Project
  • Family Literacy Nights
  • Math Nights organized by grade level
  • Weekly parent group meetings (in conjunction with First Five)
  • Weekly pre-kindergarten class (in conjunction with First Five)
  • Morning Break Club provides parents a weekly opportunity to meet with the school’s community liaison to discuss school programs, services, and activities. Speakers are called upon to provide guidance and education on various topics.
  • Community Based English Tutoring (CBET) meets weekly to teach parents English and how to help their children with homework.
We invite parents to play a role in school governance. Parents are actively involved in the following:
  • School Site Council, which meets monthly to make decisions about our School Plan and to identify strategies to increase student achievement
  • English Learner Advisory Council, which meets monthly to learn about and make decisions about programs for our English Learners
  • Parent Teacher Association (PTA), which supports our school by volunteering for school activities and raising funds for field trips, disaster supplies, and other student-centered activities
