RUSD Students Shine at Science Olympiad! Congrats to Jellick, Hurley, Northam and Ybarra!

RUSD Students Shine at Science Olympiad:

Congratulations to RUSD students who participated in the 29th Annual Los Angeles County Science Olympiad held at Occidental College on February 28, 2015. There were 60 schools that competed in this hands-on science competition and RUSD congratulates Jellick Elementary, Hurley Elementary, Northam Elementary, and Ybarra Academy who brought home medals! Teams from each school included 15 students who participated in 20 events and demonstrated their science skills.

The Jellick Jaguar Science Olympiad team broke out and won a silver medal at the 2015 Los Angeles County Science Olympiad. Students practiced for several months, culminating in a day-long competition which included an Egg Drop, Pasta Mobile and other science-related events. The team was coached by Marci Crosby and Eleanor Purdy and supported by Heather Darrow and many parents. Jellick Principal John Staumont shared, “Our motto is, ‘Jaguars never quit!’ and this was true for this event. We earned a bronze last year and the team decided they could do better. That’s just what they did. They worked long hours and came together as a team. I am very proud of our students, teachers, and parents. Once again, our team is already thinking about next year.”

Northam Elementary Principal Celia Munguia shared, “This is our second year participating in the Science Olympiad. We are very proud of all of our Knights of Honor who participated. We earned the bronze medal for the second year in a roll. We are Northam! We are Knights! We are Scholars! We will return for the 2016 Olympiad and we are going for the GOLD! Thanks again to our parents and community who support our amazing students.”

The Hurley Hawks Science Olympiad team was thrilled to bring home a bronze medal. Students had fun competing in various events like Crime Busters, Tennis Catapult, Mystery Architecture and Weather or Not. Fourth grade Teacher Vanessa Guadron put forward countless hours and energy to make sure her Hurley Hawks represented Hurley and the community in fierce fashion.

Hurley Principal Yesenia Alvarez said, “She is an amazing asset for Hurley and our students! Our students are proud of their communication, collaboration and exemplary efforts. The parents of our fifteen families were with us every event of the way. Their students are Hurley superstars.”

The Ybarra Academy Bears Science Olympiad scored a bronze medal! Principal Annette Ramirez said, “We want to thank our outstanding teachers Mr. Mesias and Mr. Eastwood for their leadership. Mr. Mesias has helped lead our students for the past 15 years in the Science Olympiad! We also want to thank our incredible parents for their continued support!”
