Registration for National Free and Reduced School Breakfast and Lunch Program for Rowland USD Students Begins July 28

ROWLAND HEIGHTS, CA – JULY 29, 2014 – The Rowland Unified School District Nutrition Services Department announced that registration has begun for families who qualify for the National School Lunch and Breakfast program. Applications and information regarding the free and reduced-price meal program will be mailed to the households of students currently enrolled in the Rowland Unified School District and are also available on the District website at www.rowlandschools.org.

            Applications will also be available at school sites and cafeterias on the first day of school.  To apply for free or reduced-price meals, families must complete a meal application and return it to the Nutrition Services Office, located at 1830 S. Nogales Street in Rowland Heights.  Applications may be submitted at any time during the school year.  The information households provide on the application will be used to determine meal eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year by Nutrition Services officials. 

 

The household size and income criteria identified below will be used to determine eligibility for free, reduced-price, or full-price meal benefits.  Children from households whose income is at or below the levels shown below are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.  For further questions, please contact RUSD Nutrition Services at (626)854-8314.

Children/households who receive CalFRESH (food stamps), California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs), Kinship Guardianship Assistance Payments (Kin-GAP), or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) benefits may be automatically eligible for free meals regardless of the income of the household in which they reside.  These students may not have to complete an Application for Free or Reduced-Price meals.  Nutrition Services officials will determine eligibility for free meals based on documentation obtained directly from the CalFRESH, CalWORKs, Kin-GAP or FDPIR office.  Nutrition Services will notify households of their eligibility by mail.  Families who receive this letter must review the eligibility notice, and the parent or guardian must contact Nutrition Services to have benefits extended to the children in the household.  Households are advised to   complete a meal application if they are not notified of their eligibility by September 30, 2014.  Households who choose to decline benefits must contact Nutrition Services. 

 

Requirements for Nutrition Services officials to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits are as follows:

 

·        For households receiving CalFRESH, CalWORKs, Kin-GAP or FDPIR benefits – applications must only include the enrolled child(ren)’s name, CalFRESH, CalWORKs, Kind-GAP, or FDPIR case number, and the signature of the parent or guardian.

 

·        For households who do not list a CalFRESH, CalWORKs, Kin-GAP or FDPIR case number, the application must include the names of all household members, the amount and source of the income received by each household member, and the signature and corresponding last four digits of the social security number of the parent or guardian who signs the application.  If the parent or guardian does not have a social security number, they must indicate that they do not have a social security number. 

 

·        Households who have foster children may include the foster children on their meal application if it helps them qualify. 

 

 

Under the provisions of the free and reduced-price meal policy, the determining official(s), as designated by Nutrition Services, shall review applications and determine eligibility.  Parents or guardians dissatisfied with the eligibility ruling may discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis.  If after speaking with the Nutrition Services official, parents who are dissatisfied with the results may make a formal request for an appeal hearing of the decision, and may do so orally or in writing to:

Families who do not qualify now may reapply for the free and reduced-price meal benefits at any time during the school year if a household member becomes unemployed or if the household income decreases, the family size increases, or if they begin to receive CalFRESH, CalWORKs, Kin-GAP, or FDPIR benefits.  Such changes may qualify the children of the household for benefits if the household’s income falls at or below the levels shown on the 2014-2015 Income Eligibility Scale.
