Rowland High School Concert Drumline Earns Silver Medal at World Championships!

What a week it has been for music students in Rowland Unified! More amazing music awards keep coming…

Rowland High School Concert Drumline Earns Silver Medal at World Championships:

Rowland HS Drumline is ranked at the highest level, the World Class Division for both Marching and Concert Drumlines. Rowland High School joined schools from around the globe -- Canada, Thailand, Japan -- and across the U.S. to compete at the Winter Guard International (WGI) World Championships held annually in Dayton, Ohio. Congratulations to the Rowland Raider Regiment who attended and brought back medals!

“To be on the National stage competing was amazing,” said Band Director Jason Alvo. “To have my percussionists win the silver medal was beyond all our greatest expectations. The students have practiced hours upon hours to train for this and their hard work and talent was rewarded.  I couldn’t be more proud as their teacher.”

Danielle Caro, First VP of the Rowland High School RIM Club and a chaperone on the trip shared this news: “There were 32 students, six instructors (including RHS Band Director, Jason Alvo) and 10 chaperones in attendance that arrived in Dayton, Ohio on Tuesday, April 8th. Last year we made a connection with a local church, Grace Community Church in Huber Heights, Ohio. They were happy to have us return and use their gym as a rehearsal site throughout the week. The kids rehearsed all day on Wednesday and in the evening we were joined by the locals who came out in support and provided a potluck dinner for us. Several even stayed for the evening rehearsal to support the students and then attend the event on Thursday. It was a great experience for the kids to interact with a community across the country and then have their own cheering section present at the competition when it began the next day.

On Thursday both groups -- Concert and Marching Drumline -- competed in Pre-lims. Concert went on to compete in Championship Finals on Friday and earned a Silver medal for 2nd place in the country! Marching Drumline went on to compete in Semi-Finals Friday, and then in Championships on Saturday. They moved up two places in ranking and ended the competition in 9th place overall in the WinterGuard International Championships.”
