Budget Message from Superintendent Dr. Mitchell

RUSD BUDGET UPDATE

Message from Superintendent Dr. Julie Mitchell

September 8, 2015

A financial report on the Rowland Unified School District’s 2014/15 Unaudited Actuals was presented at tonight’s Board of Education meeting. The report illustrated that the Board of Education and I are committed to transparency by providing detailed information on the budget process, revenues, expenditures, and the general fund reserves. Unaudited Actuals Provide Unique Opportunity for Investment in RUSD

The availability of one-time funds provides a unique opportunity for RUSD. Due to an unanticipated increase in the unrestricted general fund balance, a plan is being developed to immediately and responsibly spend-down the reserves on needed and necessary items across our District that have previously gone neglected. No decisions have been made, but through previous suggestions that have been brought to my attention, ideas include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing additional funds for co-curricular activities and classroom supplies
  • Replacement of District white fleet vehicles
  • New custodial equipment
  • Establishing a robust professional development opportunity for both certificated and classified
  • A one-time, off-schedule salary enhancement
  • Technology upgrades and infrastructure

These additional funds provide a unique opportunity for RUSD. The Board and I look forward to quickly seeing these funds used to benefit our students, schools and staff. I have, and will continue to work collaboratively with ARE, CSEA and other stakeholders to develop a plan for these funds. A report regarding the expenditure of these funds will be presented at the October 13, 2015 Board of Education meeting.

Your input is welcome! If you have suggestions regarding the expenditure of available funds, please share your ideas through Let’s Talk! on our website or RUSD Mobile App.

Sincerely,

Julie Mitchell, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools
